Have you wondered how your lenses are made? In general, there are two types of ways to make lenses using advanced technology.

The two types are:

  1. Pre-manufactured Lenses
  2. Custom Manufactured Lenses

Pre-manufactured Lenses

These type of lenses also commonly known as “Stock” lenses undergo a cast moulding process where plastic is injected into a mold of a single particular prescription. After the mold cools, the lens is popped out and polished. These lenses are pre-manufactured with a certain base curve, prescription and blank size. The lenses are then coated with anti-glare, anti-scratch or both, and packaged for retail. Once the lens is finished, optical or optometry retailers will offer these lenses for customers based on their visual needs.

Custom Manufactured Lenses

Digital lenses aka. Surfaced lenses are made by taking a blank piece of plastic (without any prescription in it) and grinding the prescription into the plastic. These lenses are custom made from a mold that can be manufactured with a custom base curve, prescription and blank size. Digital lenses have a more advanced manufacturing process using top of line technology to enhance quality and performance. Our digital Kodak Lenses use i-SyncTM Technology to create a single vision lens that delivers greater clarity and performance at all prescription powers. This technology allows 1/100th diopter prescription lens accuracy that provides incredibly clear vision for a truly unmatched visual experience.

Free Form lenses are a special type of digital lens that gives the absolute best possible optical quality. Free Form is a revolutionary digital manufacturing process that uses computer-aided design and surfacing to create high-level, customized eyeglass lenses with your unique prescription.

Think about the first time you saw high-definition television. Remember how it made your old analog TV picture seem pixelated and blurry? High-definition makes colours brighter, shapes sharper, and brought everything keenly into focus. Now imagine having the same experience with your eyeglasses. Sure, you can probably see fine with the ones you have, just like watching analog TV was fine, but what if you could upgrade to high-definition for your eyes? If you want to experience high-definition, try Free Form Kodak Persona HD lenses that are made specifically for your eyes and eyewear.

Advantages:

  • Great for Single Vision Prescriptions (SPH: +3.75 to -6.00 & CYL: 0.00 to -2.00)
  • Faster Turnaround Times (convenience)
  • Affordable (Least Expensive)

Disadvantages:

  • Limited prescription and blank sizes
  • Average optical quality due to increased internal stress in the lens
    • As the mold cools, different parts of the lens harden at an unequal rate creating internal stress which leads to minor visual distortions. Noticeable for certain prescriptions and eye sensitivity.
  • Does not factor in frame point of wear measurements such as OC/seg height, pantoscopic tilt, wrap angle, back vertex distance

Advantages:

  • Can create almost any prescription this way (high SPH, CYL, ADD and Prism)
  • Lack internal stress, so have better optical quality than stock lenses
  • Customized prescription with base curve and OC/seg height specification
  • Can fit any frame shape and accommodate wrap for less distortion (blank can be made in any size)

Disadvantages:

  • More expensive, as these are custom made lenses

Advantages:

  • Exceptional night/low light vision: Free-form lenses can reduce glare and halo effects caused by light sources at night, such as car headlights
  • Exceptional contrast perception: Free-form lenses can sharpen vision
  • Exceptional colour vision: Free-form lenses can maximize the optics built into your lenses, providing brighter and more intense colours
  • Can create almost any prescription this way (high SPH, CYL, ADD and Prism)
  • Lack internal stress, so have better optical quality than stock lenses
  • Customized prescription with base curve and OC/seg height specification
  • Customized prescription with eyewear point of wear measurements such as pantoscopic tilt, wrap and back vertex distance
  • Can fit any frame shape and accommodate wrap for less distortion (blank can be made in any size)

Disadvantages:

  • More expensive, as these are custom made and high definition lenses

Stock lenses are like buying a one-size-fits-all suit, a digital/surfaced lens is buying a suit in your size off-the-rack, and freeform lenses are like getting a tailor-made suit

Click Here to Learn About Blue Light and UV Protection

Every day, we are exposed to Ultraviolet (UV) and high energy visible (HEV) blue light from multiple sources: the sun, indoor lighting and electronic devices such as smartphones and computer screens.

Invisible UV light contributes to the formation of cataracts and HEV light can cause damage to the retina, the most vulnerable tissue of the eye, accelerating the development of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

The ideal pair for work, school or leisure

Whether working on a computer or tablet, reading a book or an e-reader, performing the everyday tasks that make up your day, under LED lights or outdoors, CHOICE BluSelect lenses block 100% of UV light and filter HEV blue light to protect your eyes from the harmful effects of the blue-violet light spectrum. How? The lens material feature works on a principle of absorption and has embedded protection that is built into the lens to reduce harmful blue light exposure.

CHOICE BluSelect and Kodak Total Blue lenses are available in a wide range of prescription and non-prescription lens options, including single vision, office and progressive lenses. They are also available in regular plastic and high impact lens materials, and in thinner high index lenses, to suit your individual prescription, frame choices and lifestyle requirements.

What is Blue Light?

High Energy Visible (HEV) light is the portion of the visible light spectrum between 380 and 500 nm. The shorter wavelengths are the highest energy, most harmful part of the spectrum. As wavelengths, get longer, the light decreases in intensity, and the Lower Energy Visible (LEV) light provides essential benefits.

Negative Effects of HEV light

  • Digital eye strain
  • Melatonin Suppression / sleeping disorders
  • Increased risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes and certain types of cancer
  • Increased risk of retinal damage and AMD

Beneficial Effects of LEV light

  • Improved memory and cognitive functions
  • Helps regulate circadian rhythm
  • Elevates moods and boosts alertness

The latest research has shown that blocking UV and HEV light is critical for protecting eyes against cataracts and age-related macular generation.

The Importance of Blocking HEV Light

Shorter wavelength light of 380 to 420 nm is especially harmful for young people under 20 years old, because they have lower amounts of protective pigment in their eyes. The risk is also much greater for patients that have had cataract removal surgery.

CHOICE BluSelect lenses block the high energy and most harmful HEV blue-violet light, while allowing beneficial LEV light transmission. These lenses are virtually clear, with blue light filtering molecules embedded in the lens material providing effective protection while avoiding the high reflectance, a common problem with blue light coatings.

Learn The Facts

  1. Blue light can harm eyes. Digital eye strain causes blurry vision, difficulty focusing, dry and irritated eyes, headaches, neck and back pain.
  2. Blue light penetrates deeper into the eye than other light. This can contribute to age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to vision loss.
  3. Over-exposure to blue light at night time can disrupt natural sleep rhythm. Blue light can inhibit the release of the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin. Blue light coming from the sun during day-time promotes the awake cycle.
  4. Kids are at higher risk. Unlike adults who have fully developed eyes, kids have less natural protection. Kids have larger pupils which permit more light to enter the eye. They also have shorter arms and hold devices closer, which causes greater exposure.
  5. 9 out of 10 people use digital devices for two or more hours each day.
  6. 65% of people experience digital eye strain.
  7. 1 in 3 people who are aware of the potential damage don’t do anything to limit their exposure to blue light.
  8. 65% of parents report that their children (under the age of 18) spend 2 or more hours on digital devices on a daily basis.
  9. More than 3 out of 4 parents are somewhat or very concerned about the impact of digital devices on children’s developing eyes.
