When televisions were created, and when computer monitors were created, we were constantly warned not to sit too near as it is bad for our eyes. However with the creation of mobile devices like smartphones, it’s as if we’re carrying a television and computer in our pockets all the time, meaning that day or night, our eyes are glued to it.

We guess it’s safe to assume that this has led to more eye problems being developed over the years, but it seems that it might run deeper than that. According to a report from WIRED UK, it seems that our obsession with our smartphones could actually be changing the shape of our eyes.

This is according to ophthalmologist Andrew Bastawrous who was quoted as saying, “Many more people are becoming shortsighted than they were a decade ago. The implications of this are not just that there are more people needing glasses, but that their condition is pathological.” While Bastawrous doesn’t explicitly say our mobile devices are to blame, he doesn’t see how else this could be happening.

Bastawrous said, “The initial theory for this is that people are doing more near-plane reading activity with smartphones which is encouraging the eye to become myopic to meet that environmental need. There’s also evidence that suggests this is happening too quickly for it to be purely an environmental or genetic response.”

Some friendly tips that can help protect your precious eyes:

  1. Give yourself a break!  Follow the 20/20/20 rule. Give yourself a 20 second break, every 20 minutes and look 20 feet away. You might notice something that can brighten your day.
  2. Block the bad blue light! Use a blue light filtering app on your phone/device or ask your eye care professional about high energy blue and UV light blocking lenses. These specialty lenses block the bad high energy blue and UV light, but also let the beneficial blue light in. Proven to reduce eye strain and improve sleep.

Transitions Adaptive Lenses Kodak Lens

Photochromic solutions that fit your lifestyle and visual needs:

When Transitions® lenses are exposed to UV light, trillions of photochromic molecules in the lens begin to change structure.  This reaction is what causes the lenses to darken.

All lenses that adapt to light use photochromic molecules; the superiority of Transitions brand technology lies in our exclusive, patented formulas.  Each formula is integrated into the surface of the lens.  These molecules constantly and smoothly recalibrate so the optimal amount of light reaches your eyes whether you’re in bright sunlight, under cloud cover or indoors.

Only Transitions® Signature lenses use exclusive Chromea7 technology, an advanced formulation that allows the lenses to be more responsive than ever before.

Chromea7 technology

This exclusive, patented formulation consists of unique dyes that are integrated into the surface of the lens. The dyes are made up of molecules that constantly and smoothly recalibrate as the light around you changes. They darken and lighten to just the right degree so the optimal amount of light reaches your eyes.

More reactive to indirect light

Chromea7 technology was designed to be even more reactive to indirect light. Indirect light can come from many sources such as light bouncing off buildings, cars, or other surfaces or light filtering through trees or clouds. The lenses can sense this light, even when you’re facing away from it, and adjust to the appropriate shade for your situation.

More responsive in hotter climates

Temperature influences the molecules in photochromic lenses; they don’t get as dark in hot climates as they would in colder weather because of how heat interacts with the molecules. The molecules in Chromea7 technology were structured to be more independent of temperature, which means they get darker in hotter climates.

Just the right shade, just the right colour

In other photochromic lenses, wearers have noticed color variations as the lenses tint and react to different types of light. The dyes in Transitions® lenses and in Chromea7 technology work together to provide an even colour at all levels of tint, in both grey and brown options.

Revolutionary testing for a revolutionary product

People wear their lenses all day, every day, in a variety of locations, temperatures and weather conditions. They experience sunny conditions, cloudy conditions and everything in between. Their position in relation to the sun also changes quite a bit. We took all of these factors into account when we tested Chromea7 technology in over 200 real life conditions representing over 1,000 scenarios that wearers experience around the world. We call it Life360.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia usually occurs beginning at around age 40, when people start having trouble reading small print or seeing their computer screens and smartphones clearly.

Presbyopia cannot be avoided, even if you’ve never had a vision problem before. Presbyopia affects nearly 1.7 billion people worldwide, and that number is expected to grow to 2.1 billion by the year of 2020.

Though presbyopia is a normal change in our eyes as we age, it often is a significant and emotional event because it’s a sign of aging that’s impossible to ignore and difficult to hide.

Presbyopic Symptoms and Signs

When you become presbyopic, you will have trouble reading materials such as books, magazines, menus, labels, and digital devices. Even though you will have some vision up close, presbyopia can cause headaches, eye strain and visual fatigue that makes reading and other near vision tasks less comfortable and more tiring.

What causes Presbyopia?

An age-related process causes presbyopia. It occurs when the natural lens inside your eye gradually thickens and loses its flexibility. These age-related changes occur within the proteins in the lens, making the lens harder and less elastic over time. Age-related changes also take place in the muscle fibers surrounding the lens. With less elasticity, the eye has a harder time focusing up close.

Presbyopia can be treated with eyeglasses, contact lenses or even surgery. Visit or ask us about presbyopia and we can provide the best visual solution that solves your needs.

Most people know that ultraviolet (UV) light can cause premature aging of the skin, sunburn and some skin cancers, but UV is also dangerous to the eyes.

Aside from skin damage that occurs in the sensitive eyelids, UV radiation has been found to be a significant factor in the development of cataracts, as well as progression of age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness. In addition, UV is an underlying cause of certain types of exposure damage to the conjunctiva in the formation of small growths called pingueculas, and larger, wedge-shaped plaques known as pterygiums. UV exposure can also cause a condition called photokeratitis, which is the medical term for an ocular sunburn. The skin covering the cornea and the conjunctiva are sensitive to damage from the same rays that cause skin sunburn elsewhere. Both UV-A and UV-B rays are implicated in these conditions.

UV light is part of the radiation spectrum and is not visible to humans. Since UV rays have more energy than visible light, they can penetrate the ocular tissues more easily and can damage the crystalline lens and the retina.

Once UV-related changes begin to appear, the best course of action is to prevent progression and further damage. Damage to the eyes happens gradually and is not reversible. It is important to protect the eyes from UV light from a very young age.

Children should wear good-quality sunglasses that block UV and wear a hat with a broad brim in front to prevent UV from getting to the eyes. Children spend more time outside and are more vulnerable to cumulative damage from UV. Like the use of seat belts, it is important to protect the eyes every time they would be exposed to the sun; the best way is to make eye protection a habit by wearing sunglasses.

Good sunglasses can be much more than just a fashion statement; they can be essential for long-term eye health. Choose sun eyewear that blocks at least 99% of UV light and select frames that wrap-around the face to get the most effective sun protection. Also, the darkness of the tint does not reflect how well the glasses block UV; the UV protection depends on the manufacturing quality and is usually indicated on the lenses.

Visit our clinics to learn more about the importance of sunglasses and protecting your eyes from harmful UV light. We have a wide selection of sunglasses that provide the protection you need and available in prescription, non-prescription, tinted, and polarized lenses.
